Behind the group is A LADDER. Wendy makes a reference to HANSEL AND GRETEL. In that story a stepmother tries to get rid of her stepchildren who have become a WHITE ELEPHANT by taking them deep into the wilderness. There they meet and OLD HAG who tricks them into captivity by TEMPTING THEM. The old woman's gingerbread house is built to attract children for her to consume, and to this end she FEEDS Hansel regularly to fatten him up. The story ends with the child tricking the old woman into a death (by oven) intended for the child.

When the children return home their stepmother is dead; creating a relationship between the old woman in the deep woods and the conniving stepmother. In other words (just like this movie) the parent that intends death on the family is killed in the course of committing the murders. The murderous hag placed deep in the woods is a 'shining' of the stepmother, the illusion she inhabits in order to attempt the murders. Ideologies are those illusions. They cannot affect the world until believed by people, who in turn change the physical world in the way instructed by the ideology.

WENDY Yeah. This whole place is such an enormous maze, I feel I'll have to leave a trail of breadcrumbs every time I come in.
